OVS is pleased to announce the return of Victim Service Academy Trainings! Partnering once again with the Institute for Disaster Mental Health at SUNY New Paltz (IDMH), OVS will offer up to six training opportunities over the next two years for newer victim service professionals from all OVS-funded programs. Each training cohort will feature eight, 90-minute virtual sessions and a one-day culmination event (in-person or virtual, depending on current New York State COVID-19 safety guidelines) and will provide victim advocates with basic principles of trauma-informed care, including how to support others and themselves. Course topics will also focus on adapting to the needs of different victim populations, and on providing culturally competent care that takes into consideration the worldviews and lived experiences of those being served. Victim Service Academy Trainings are for entry-level victim advocates only and all sessions are interactive and require participants to have a working camera and microphone. Space will be limited to 25 participants per 8-week cohort. The Spring 2021 Cohort will run Wednesdays at 9:00am from April 7 – May 27, 2021. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and will open on March 23, 2021 at 9:00am. Visit ovs.ny.gov/academy or click below to learn more and to register on Tuesday.
Participation in each Victim Service Academy Training will cost $175.00 per registrant and will cover course materials and administrative expenses related to participation. More details, including cancelation policy and special request instructions, are available via the Victim Service Academy Training Registration Guidelines.
